I-Rice launch spearheaded by NFA

It has been announced by National Food Authority (NFA) that they are going to go ahead with the nationwide launch of I-Rice (Iron Fortified Rice) program. The event is going to take place at the San Andres Sports Complex in San Andres, Manila and would be later on repeated in Cebu and Davao.

I-Rice program is in compilation to the Republic Act No. 8976 which is also known as Food Fortification Act of 2000. The act calls for the fortification of foods such as rice, flour, cooking oil and also refined sugar.

The act came into being when it was found that an alarmingly low rate of micro-nutrients have been found in processed food. It has been found to encourage manufacturers to infuse more nutrients in the food. They are going to fortify products under the voluntary system or Sangkap Pinoy Seal Program.

Main aim of the I-Rice program is to lessen or totally eliminate the malnutrition that is present in the country. Most of the focus is going to be on iron-deficiency anemia. And the main targets of the program are going to be nursing mothers, pregnant women and young children.
