Battling the Killer Cancer

Battling the Killer Cancer

Cancer, the deadly diseases is for sure one of the scariest words to be heard. It is the second most cause of human deaths in America and is next to heart disease according to the U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Although a spectrum of research efforts is being conducted, diagnosing cancer has still remained dreaded with the cure still elusive. This is in part owing to the mystery of cancer cells growing in a highly unpredictable manner with more than 100 different types of cancer. However in many cases the disease does not remain to be a silent killer.

Reportedly since the mid-1970s, early screening show survival rates increase by at least five years for cancer patients in the U. S. and today the survival rate has increased to 65% as compared to the 1970s with just 50%. With African American population having the most mortality rates, more men die due to cancer than women in almost every racial and ethnic group. Asian American and Pacific Islander population, showed about half the rate of African American men and women, have the lowest cancer death rates.

Researchers working on The Cancer Genome Project (TCGP), one of the seven signature projects of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH) are laying more and more efforts to crack down on the process of cancer development.
