Four years ago, there was a large fire in the storehouse at Buncefield oil in Hertfordshire. The fire caused significant harm to the people and the property. Since the time of the Second World War, this has been the biggest outburst in Europe.
However, the area has still not been able to recover from the damages successfully, as the Environment Ministry disclosed that the drinking water in the area is still contaminated.
Yesterday, the court ordered the five Companies responsible for the fire, to shell out a sum of £10million due to the explosion that occurred in 2005.
Mike Penning, an MP from Hemel Hempstead disclosed that the damage done due to the explosion was more than £1billion. He added that the fine cannot give back the people the things that they have lost, which included their lives, houses and enterprise.
Solicitor Des Collins stated that the firms make huge money and this punishment is not enough.
Justice David Calvert-Smith of the St Albans Crown Court drew attention to the fact that if the flare-up had occurred on a working day than there would have been many more deaths.
Local MP and junior Transport Minister, Mike Penning, revealed that the inhabitants of the place are set to care for themselves as the effects of the fire will continue to exist.
