Jairam may give a go-ahead to nuclear plant
Sources present in the Environment Ministry have said that the minister, Jairam Ramesh is going to allow the starting of the fist nuclear plant, on Sunday. This plant has been designed and started in collaboration with a French firm and will become operational in Jaitapur in Maharashtra.
The Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) has already given its clearance to the 10,000 MW plant that is going to be started by NPCIL along with Areva. This is necessary if the plant needs clearance from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board.
The project is first of its kind after India and France went ahead with their civil nuclear agreement. As per the latest developments the new plant will start functioning from somewhere between 2017-18.
The agreement is going to be signed between the two sides when French President Nicholas Sarkozy comes to visit India in December 6-7.
As of now, the project has been facing opposition from civil societies like he Konkan Bachao Samiti. They have said that there are not proper radiological safeties which will be directly impacting the environment. They have also claimed that there are faults in the environmental impact assessment report.
