Funding for mentally ill can save lives

Professor Patrick McGorry, who has been made the Australian of the year has said that mental health area needs more funding. He used the ongoing Queensland Government mental health summit as the platform and raised the topic of funding.

The professor advised that a rise of some $5-$15 billion is going to be needed in form of funding over the next decade is something substantial needs to be done.

Besides this he also reiterated the point that more Headspace centres that could help young people are needed across the length and breadth of the country.

Estimates have shown that some 2,500 Aussies die every year because of some or other kind of mental disorder. That means a death for the same takes place every three to four hours.

Ironically, most of these deaths are preventable and just need some kind of funding. Australia being a developed country has the capacity and responsibility to do so.

Experts have also said that more humane ways should be used for dealing with detainees.

Many deaths have taken place because of bad treatment of the mentally ill patients.
