Bone fragments from a remote island may be of Amelia Earhart, scientists

A team of scientists have said that three bone fragments found on a South Pacific Island could be of missing pilot Amelia Earhart, who was attempting to become the first women to fly around the world in 1937.

Scientists at University of Oklahoma are planning to extract the DNS from the remains. The three fragments were found by a team of researchers from International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery on an expedition to Nikumaroro Island.

The island situated around 1,800 miles from the US state of Hawaii is along Amelia Earhart's fateful route. Scientists say that it could take months before they can find out who the remains belong to. Some also say that the remains could be of a turtle as the remains were found near a hollowed out shell. The discovery could solve the mystery as to what happened to Earhart.

Ric Gillespie, director of the International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery, or Tighar said, "There's no guarantee. You only have to say you have a bone that may be human and may be linked to Earhart and people get excited. But it is true that, if they can get DNA, and if they can match it to Amelia Earhart's DNA, that's pretty good."

The researchers have also found a mirror from a woman's compact, buttons and a zipper from a flight jacket during their $500,000 expedition in 2007. the campsite material found on the island also suggest Earhart and Noonan might have survived the flight and had come to the island.

Earhart and Noonan are believed to have crashed at sea while flying from Lae, New Guinea, to Howland Island after they ran out of fuel. A California court has officially declared Earhart dead in 1939.
