Ever since the law that said about every child's need for a father has been relaxed in UK, there has been a surge in the number of lesbian couples going in for IVF treatment. The same trend has also been noticed amongst single women as well.

If one goes by the figures, then the number of lesbian couples has doubled while in the case of single women the rise has been three times. In 2009 alone some 350 lesbian couples underwent for the treatment. In 2007, the number was 176.

As for the single women, the rise has been from 347 in 2007 to 1,070 in 2009. The data that was collected and analyzed by The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority showed that this rise has happened even when the number of clinics providing donor insemination has remained the same.

While the treatments come out to be expensive for infertile lesbians, it has been adopted by the fertile ones since it is less complicated and cheaper.

Meanwhile, new changes in the law have allowed for either two mothers or two fathers to appear for a baby's birth certificate.
