Shortage of crew in EasyJet

UK-based airline EasyJet PLC is facing shortage of crew in some parts of its network, which is causing delays and disruption at the low cost airline.

The industrial action by air-traffic control workers, the volcanic ash over Europe and crew problem has caused significant disturbance, hampering the goodwill of the airline.

New Chief Executive, Carolyn McCall stated that airline would add staff at London's Gatwick airport to fix the regular delays and cancellations.

The airline has incurred cost of £65m due to ash clouds with £36m paid to customers in compensation and lost nearly £29m in sales.

The revenue of EasyJet has increased by 5.3 percent to £759m within three months to the end of June.

The company is expecting to generate pre-tax profit of between £100m and £150m in this year.

The airline dismissed many employees of its staff, particularly pilots, in the beginning of winter season as it reduced the capacity.

To fix the crew problem, the airline has increased its staff to 3,580 for the week end on July 12 as compared to 3,321 in the same period in 2009.

The number of pilots has increased from 1,677 in previous year to 1,793.
