Resignation of Politician Refused by Belgian King

The resignation of the politician, who has been given the charge of forming the new Government, has not been accepted by Belgium's King Albert II. Elio Di Rupo is a French-speaking Socialist party leader and he had been asked to step back as he said that he is unable to bring together the political differences in the State.

But, on the contrary, he has now been asked to carry on with his task and make the new Government. Di Rupo said that the issues of finances and regional powers that are to be sought out for making a seven-party national Government; are not being agreed upon by both the Flemish nationalists and the Christian Democrats.

It was after this clash that Di Rupo had a meeting for three hours with the Belgian King at the palace in suburban Brussels, and gave his resignation letter. He gave the reason that he is unable to make a working coalition Government.

But, the King did not accept his resignation and instead Di Rupo had to agree that he will finish his task.

An e-mailed statement from the royal palace said, “Mr. Di Rupo asked the king to be relieved of his mission. The king refused and asked him to continue his mission”.
