Recently the ACT Government has decided to give the prospect of naming and shaming the Territory's germ-infested eateries.

Since last two years, 38 prohibition and warning notices had been issued to Canberra eateries, but under current legislation, there is no requirement to inform the public about the violations.

An investigation is being done by ACT Health Minister Katy Gallagher whether to publicly name and shame unhygienic eateries. She has said that she has asked her department to draft changes which are similar to the New South Wales legislation.

Steven Fanner, the General Manager for the ACT branch of the Australian Hotels Association, has said that at present the main aim of new policy should target only the most serious cases.

According to him, it is quiet unbelievable that Canberra has been found in wide epidemic around food safety. Indeed more than 99 per cent of these businesses are working unharmed. He has added that there is a need of new power which needs to be implemented carefully.

Minister Gallagher has said that it is also expected to have a regulatory system which awards a food hygiene rating to businesses that would run alongside the name and shame policy.
