The Health Quality Council of Alberta, Alberta Medical Association and Area Physicians Association are in the favor of conducting an independent inquiry exploring chronic ailments in the health-care system whereas the Stelmach government is of the opposite view.
The opposition opines that the probe is needed to improve public confidence and review hundreds of cases of substandard care.
Whereas Premier Ed Stelmach said, “Alberta Health Services is already conducting an internal review of 322 cases, first identified last fall, of questionable patient care -including some deaths -due to delays in admitting and treating people in one Edmonton hospital”.
He also said that no one in the government would attempt to censure Sherman for his explosive claims in the legislature and he suggested government to carry on with the normal business of the legislature.
Dr. Lloyd Maybaum, President of the Calgary and Area Physicians Association said that a probe by an independent third party such as the health quality council was essential to gain back the public faith in the system.
Dr. Paul Parks, the emergency section President of the Alberta Medical Association said that the Tory government was trying to paint an image of an open and friendly environment where doctors can raise their concerns about the state of provincial health care.
