The Canadian Cancer Society has replaced live flowers with yellow plastic daffodil pins for their spring fundraising campaign. Cindy Vinall, head of the Chatham-Kent branch of the society said that they were transitioning to the pins because they can easily be worn on clothing to raise more awareness regarding the issue at hand.
However, she said that you can still pick up bunches of live daffodils at 25 different places in Chatham starting March 30. The daffodil is used as the symbol of hope for the Canadian Cancer Society, and both flowers and pins will be available to the public at the end of March or the beginning of April.
April has been designated as a month to partner with the Canadian Cancer Society and fight the disease through a residential campaign. Jackie George, the campaign’s residential program coordinator, is reaching out for volunteers to make this fundraiser successful. She needs people to sign up as canvassers to go door-to-door to help raise funds.
“My goal is to have somebody knocking at every door in the area. Canvassers do it for a lot of reasons”, she said. “They find it rewarding and many come back each year if they can. We all want to fight back”. She’s so dedicated to her vision that she has begun to cold call people to fill the volunteer voids in her plan.
