The federal Medicare program serves more than 46 million seniors and disabled people across the nation. People need to educate themselves about the Social Security benefits so that they can become eligible for the Medicare programs and avoid paying the late penalties. If a citizen is getting Social Security or Railroad Retirement Benefits (RRB) retirement benefits he/she will automatically get Part A and B starting the first day of the month the person turns 65. The citizens who receive disability benefits from Social Security or certain disability benefits from the RRB get Part A and B the first day of the 25th month after Social Security or RRB benefits start. The citizens who are working at the age of 65 are not entitled to get the Social Security or RRB benefits. These citizens will not receive the Medicare Part A and Part B automatically.

If a person signs-up three months before he/she turns 65 the Medicare coverage will start at the first day of the prior month. The General Enrollment Period for individuals who don't sign up for Part B lasts from January 1-March 31 every year.
