Oxford hospital fined for removing life-support system

Fine of £1,000 has been charged on an Oxford hospital for removing life support system of a patient against the wishes of his family members.

This comes just a month after a report published by NHS showed that John Radcliffe Hospital was unable to take care of older patients with the kind of care, compassion and dignity that they need.

In a detailed report given to the Parliament, Ann Abraham, the parliamentary and health service ombudsman told as to how life support system of an elderly was switched off. And this was done without his family's permission. The person became seriously ill after undergoing heart surgery.

The family had also filed its complaint where it said that they were unable to find clear information as to what was happening. When they asked the hospital for details, it refused to give them so. A note that said ‘do not attempt resuscitation’ was also put on the records of the elderly patient.

What is amazing and unfortunate is the fact that this is not the only hospital that has been found to be mis-performing. There are others too that have been named in the NHS report.
