Calcium Supplements Ascend Heart Risks

Calcium Supplements Ascend Heart Risks

Calcium supplements may strengthen your bones but it can definitely weaken your heart, warn the researchers.

After the findings of a study that indicated that mere intake of calcium supplements can elevate the person’s risks of acquiring heart diseases, a new research has claimed that even if you take them with vitamin D, which supposedly helps to absorb calcium, no significant changes are noted.

The study that was conducted by the researchers from the Auckland University in New Zealand and Aberdeen University, some 16,000 women were studied. All the subjects in the trial group were elderly and had already crossed their menopausal stage.

It was observed over a period of seven years that the women who were on the daily supplement of one gram calcium along with 0.01 milligrams of vitamin D were at the increased risk of 21% for acquiring cardiovascular ailments in the near future.

Not only this, but with the ascended risk of heart diseases an elevated chance of 20% of having a stroke was also reported.

Prof. Ian Reid, the lead investigator of the study, stated: "Even though these increases are relatively small, we think they're significant, firstly, because a lot of people around the world take calcium and vitamin D, and secondly because what the data in these databases suggest is that we're probably going to cause more heart-related events than we prevent fractures”.
