Baby with Terminal Illness Returns Home to Canada

It is after months of painful treatment that the terminally ill cancer affected baby ‘Joseph’ is now going to return to his home. The child shall be brought to Ontario from SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center in St. Louis.

This is where he had been receiving treatment to fight his ailment. He shall come to Ontario on Thursday.

The child suffers from a rare form of progressive neurological disease that has affected him so badly that he has now reached a stage beyond recovery. He is now in a vegetative state and the Canadian doctors are of the view that he cannot be treated beyond this.

There was a procedure of tracheotomy that his parents wanted him to undergo. This is what they wanted their son to undergo so that he could peacefully spend the remaining days of his life at home. The London Health Sciences Center, however, refused to perform this surgery on him saying that it had too many complications.

The boy was then taken to another hospital where he underwent this surgery. It was done in order to relieve the child of some of the pain.

“We wanted to ensure that Joseph was as comfortable and as secure as possible”, said Dr. Robert Wilmott, the chief of pediatrics at the hospital.
