The consumers have spent less than $4.2 billion in the first quarter of 2011. There has been a 9.8% drop from the earlier spending of $4.64 billion on home entertainment in the first quarter in the last year.
On the other hand, the sales of the films which were released in the form of DVD and Blu-ray were down by 25% from the last year sales.
The disc sales were only $2.07 billion from the earlier $2.6 billion and have seen a slid of 20%.
"The story of Blu-ray as a format is a good one", Crupnick says. "The challenge is it's being (compared) against one of the most successful technology product introductions in the last 25 years, which is DVD".
However, the movie rental websites such as Netflix have reported modest gains in the first quarter of this year. The customers spending on movie rentals have increased by 2.5% to become approximately $2 billion. The trend is now going towards movie renting.
