John C. Williams of San Francisco and Eric Rosengren of Boston, both presidents of two federal reserve regional banks in the United States, say that the Federal government isn’t hitting its goal for full employment, and that inflation in the country isn’t posing a long-term risk.
The two bank presidents are following in the footsteps of Federal Chairman Ben S. Bernanke who last week said the stimulus would stay in place after he ended large-scale purchases of bonds in June.
“Right now we’re pretty far away from our targets, and right now we’re keeping monetary policy accommodative”, said Rosengren, age 53, to a reporter from Bloomberg news. “It’s very appropriate given how far we are from our targets”.
Yesterday, stocks in the United States fell while bonds climbed after private reports showed that companies hired less people than expected in April and that the services industry was the slowest at expanding over the last eight months.
A report that is expected to be put out tomorrow by the Labor Department may even show that the jobless rate of 8.8% was unchanged, according to estimates.
According to Rosengren, because the unemployment rate is “well above” the long-term norm of 5% to 6%, the government needed to help stimulate the economy to help support growth in jobs.
