The long running battle of Nobel laureate and founder of Grameen bank in Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus, has come to an end. As per reports, Mr. Yunus had field a case to raise the minimum age of retirement in the bank, in order to keep the power of managing director under him.
Refuting the plea, Bangladesh’s Supreme Court ordered the well known micro-lender to make an exit from the Grameen Bank. Though the spurious fight for the meaty role of managing director has been a talking point in the political corridors, Mr. Yunus’ quest had created a rift with the government of Sheikh Hasina Wajed.
Built on the model of micro-financing, Grameen Bank has reportedly claimed that Mr. Yunus is eagerly waiting the decision of the Board of Directors of Grameen Bank to handover the charge of Managing Director.
Apparently, a government-appointed panel had raised questions on the governance practices followed by the Board of Directors of Grameen Bank and further, claimed board as “redundant and subservient to the will, whims and caprices of its managing director”, after reviewing minutes of 40 beard meetings.
In response to the Supreme Court’s verdict, the cohort of elected representatives of the bank’s borrowers has appealed the government to promote Mr. Yunus as the new Chairman of Grameen Bank.
