As stated in the annual report of Ann Cavoukian, who is the Commissioner of Information and Privacy, since last few days, several complaints have been received from people regarding the fees structure charged from them for accessing their own medical records. Keeping this in mind, she has ordered the Ontario’s health ministry to set more reasonable benchmarks, but till now, Ontario is not at all agreeing to work upon the same.
Recently in one case, it was noticed that a patient was charged $125 to access 34 pages of her records from her doctor.
This has made Ann Cavoukian to call on the government involvement for setting specific fee structure that, health care providers should charge people for accessing their own records. But according to the Health Minister Deb Matthews, the province isn’t currently looking to make any sort of changes to the fee system.
He said, "My understanding is that it's not a widespread problem but it is a concern so I'm going to follow up with the OMA (Ontario Medical Association) to talk to them about the issue. In the meantime, if people are being charged what they feel is an unfair fee they absolutely should go to the IPC (Information and Privacy Commissioner) who will make that determination".
