Simply Thick May Harm Premature-Born Kids

On Tuesday, the B. C. Centre for Disease Control and the Provincial Health Authority has warned that infants who are less than 37 weeks should not be fed with Simply Thick as it may put their life in risk.

Simply Thick is a product which is added to liquid diets like breast milk and infant formula to thicken them so that an infant could swallow easily. Sometimes Simply Thick is recommended by doctors to premature infants to help them with swallowing difficulties.

The US Food and Drug Administration has reported 15 cases of an intestinal illness - necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) - out of which two infants have died after being fed with Simply Thick. It has been told that NEC mostly affects premature newborn infants. However, no such case has been reported in Canada.

Parents have been advised not to give Simply Thick to their infants unless and until a substitute of it is found. Moreover, doctors have also been advised not to recommend Simply Thick to premature babies. Simply Thick is easily available in the markets of Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has confirmed that they are working with suppliers to communicate the dire consequences of Simply Thick to their customers.
