The Opposition, New Democrats have highlighted the need of improving the conditions at the Haida Gwaii hospital on British Columbia's north coast. They said that the conditions at the hospital are intolerable and government is required to take immediate action to deal with the problem.
On Tuesday, Health Critic, Mike Farnworth said that the government must review the conditions of the hospital and carry out a survey, in order to plan about how to address the problem.
The Opposition New Democrats has found that at Haida Gwaii hospital, physiotherapy sessions are held in an old greenhouse and chemotherapy drugs are mixed in an outdoor wooden shed since 2009. They have appealed the government to upgrade the hospital to improve the standards of patient care and safety at the hospital. They have said that the hospital needs residential care beds, assisted living units and community health programs as part of the improvement.
Health Minister, Mike de Jong said they have not denied that the conditions and standards at the hospital are poor but they are working towards bringing improvement in the hospital. De Jong has estimated that it will cost $60 million to replace the hospital on Haida Gwaii.
