150 Countries Join the WHO and World Bank in UN CRPD

The World Health Organisation and World Bank, revealed in their first world report on disability to the Guardian reports that 1 billion people were physically and mentally handicap and out of which, 80% were residents of developed nations. As per the statistics, 20% people below poverty line were the victims of disabilities.

The organisations believed that they could not accomplish the Millennium Development Goals until they understand and fulfill the basic needs of the poor people. As per Dr. Margaret Chan, Director General WHO, “We must do more to break the barriers which segregate people with disabilities forcing them to the margins of society. The President of World Bank, Robert Zoellick said that the Millennium Development Goals comprised of improving the health, literacy standard, generate employment and provide the disabled with other essential needs”.

As per the data, 1 out of every 7 people was a disable person and the count was increasing day by day. As a result, 150 countries have joined the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD); the countries were following the guidelines of CRPD in order to balance the rights and prospects for people who were physically or mentally disable. On the other hand, Christian Blind Mission (CBM) was working on 900 projects in about 90 countries and was looking after the needs of 25 million people.
