In an attempt to expose a nursing home south of Montreal after observing severe rashes on the body of a man with Parkinson's and dementia, family of the patient produced a video recording of a large number of cases of alleged neglect and abuse.
Seeking justice for the insensitive treatment being given to the 68-year-old Guy Courville, his family filed a lawsuit against the nursing home seeking medical claim of $91,000.
The video showed that despite the presence of medical staff, the patient fell 45 times over a period of six months. The family is in extreme shock over the standard of medical assistance being given to the dementia patients. Even two doctors have been accused of misdiagnosing epilepsy in the man and further, on putting him on wrong medication.
"These people have no place in the health community", his wife, Jacqueline Rioux, told a news conference. "If they did that to my spouse, they must be doing it to others”.
Though the nursing home ordered investigation in the case, it defended by saying, "We can never tolerate the conduct portrayed in the images that were broadcast. But, while shocking, these images should not stigmatize a profession which, in the vast majority (of cases), does its work with ethics and care”.
