A Canadian and international research reveals that 5 million people in Canada were habituated to smoking. The diseases due to tobacco led to death of 37,000 people in a year, revealed a study commenced by University of Waterloo, in 2010.
The country has to spend $4.4 billion as health costs and 2.2 million are spent on intense care in hospitals, every year. In order to decrease tobacco consumption, the government had implemented heavy taxes on tobacco, which proved to be effective.
On the contrary, implementing high tax rates on cigarettes in Quebec led the usual smokers into other direction, during the years 2008 and 2009. Quebec witnessed a minor increase in smokers of 20.7% in 2009, which was 19.1% in the year 2008. According to the Concordia University researchers, even 1% drop or increase in the smokers led to saving or spending $41 million a year in health-care costs. A 20.7% increase meant 1,343,000 smokers, in Quebec, leading themselves towards various health problems occurring from smoking.
Increasing the price of packaging proved to be quiet successful in declining the demand of cigarettes as most of the young people were disturbed with increase in the rates of cigarettes. Unfortunately people belonging to the age group of 25 to 44 were resistant to price hikes on cigarettes.
