Self Medication Leads to Addiction and Misuse: Study

A study, published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, revealed that people suffering from depression who medicated themselves with drugs and alcohol to be at ease, eventually got addicted to it. The research performer James Bolton, MD, of the University of Manitoba in Canada and team, observed the patients suffering from anxiety who consume alcohol and drugs to relieve themselves from the uneasiness.

The researchers also claimed that the people suffering from anxiety took the way of dealing with the dilemma by themselves instead of going for a proper medical treatment, which involved psychotherapy or meditation.

On one hand, the researchers claimed that self medication led to misuse and addiction to alcohol and drugs, whereas some researchers suggested that the consumption of such relievers led to the development of further anxieties.

In order to receive the accurate level of risks related to self medication, the researchers consulted the data collected by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism on the psychiatric disorders, self-medication, and sociodemographic problems.

They analyzed the data of 34,653 adults of the US, divided into three groups namely, no self-medication, self-medication with alcohol only, or self-medication with drugs. The statistics revealed that the patients prefer alcohol much more than drugs as a source of medication to ease.
