Venus Williams Popularizes Sjogren’s syndrome

Venus Williams brings into limelight the disease of Sjogren’s syndrome with contraction. The player has withdrawn from the US tennis open to be held this year, as she was not keeping well.

Venus is suffering an auto-immune disorder known as Sjogren’s, which has been named after the founder of the disease, an ophthalmologist from Sweden. In many cases the disease occurs by itself but at times it occurs due to the occurrence of rheumatoid arthritis.

There are millions of people in America suffering from the disorder, and it generally attacks a person above 40 years-of-age, with women at a higher susceptibility to its contraction. The disease damages the glands which generate wetness. The disease is also influenced with factors like hereditary and prevailing environment.

The most striking factor about the disease is that the sufferers of the disease do not exhibit same symptoms. Symptoms in Ms. Williams were constant tiredness, breathing problem, swollen hands and malformed joints.

The problem was detected quiet late, after she started feeling the symptoms. As per Venus Williams, “Over time, you do start to wonder what's happening and if you're going crazy”. Certain anti-malaria medicines and prednisone are said to be effective in treating the disorder to an extent.
