Wanda Sykes Shares Her Bilateral Mastectomy Experience

Wanda Sykes, an American writer and comedian actress, disclosed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show about her bilateral mastectomy that she underwent, as she was diagnosed with Ductal Carcinoma in Situ (DCIS).

The star revealed that her physicians suggested her to undergo bilateral mastectomy as she was diagnosed with stage zero cancer or DCIS. She took the decision to undergo double mastectomy, as she did not want her condition to develop in to a cancer and spread in other parts as well.

Sykes notified that as she has maternal family history with breast cancer, so she will be following the regular check-up patterns in order to lead a healthy and safe life.

She did not talk about the mutation in her BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes that result in the increased risk of breast cancer by 12% to 60%. However, she stated, "I had both breasts removed, because now I have zero chance of having breast cancer".

According to National Cancer Institute, the women diagnosed with DCIS should carry on with the treatment to be on the safer side, as many of the experts do not suggest the treatments as the condition do not carry much risk. But in some of the cases, it turns out to be dreadful, as the condition progresses leaving the patient in a menacing condition.
