Blend of Radiation Standard Hormone Therapy to Combat Prostate Cancer

Blend of Radiation Standard Hormone Therapy to Combat Prostate Cancer

"These are the patients, if you look overall, who die of prostate cancer, whereas many of the people who present with earlier-stage disease, they actually will live very long even with or without treatment”, said a radiation oncologist from the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto, Dr. Padraig Warde, who had led a research suggesting to make use of radiation along with the standard hormone therapy in order to combat the terrible prostate cancer.

Before suggesting the findings, experts analyzed more than 1,205 prostate cancer sufferers and observed that those treated with a blend of radiation and hormone therapy had reflected better survival rates as compared to those who just received the standard hormonal treatment.

However, the researchers emphasized on the need of more research work in order to explore the related consequences of the radiation as they have acknowledged very less adverse episodes in both the groups. Scientists have anticipated that it can have a bad impact on the surrounding tissues, including the rectum as well as bladder, which indeed have close association with tenderness, bleeding and diarrhea.

While applauding the study findings in a commentary accompanying the study, an expert from the Urology Department at the University of California, San Francisco, Dr. Matthew Cooperberg expressed confidence that the findings will play a role to fight the lethal disease.

Further, Dr. Matthew Cooperberg said that the Dr. Padraig Warde, in collaboration with fellow scientists, has provided strong evidences to clearly depict that androgen deprivation therapy is not empowered to cure the high-risk prostate cancer.

Simultaneously, he has stressed on understanding the matter that can reflect best treatment strategy e. g. using radiation and hormone therapy or surgery and then radiation first.
