It seems that stem cell therapy could do wonders in life of patients in the time to come, as a recent study has claimed that there are fair chances of reducing probability of health stroke by as much as 80% if being given experimental stem cell treatment called Revascor. It was found after a Phase II study on heart failure. It was made public on Monday at an American Heart Association meeting in Orlando, Florida.

Backed by Mesoblast Ltd. (MSB), the study roped in patients of heart failure between the age of 20 and 80. The team tracked patients for almost 12 years. It was also observed that 45 patients who had been given a shot of Revascor along with standard medicines were found to have reduced the risk of a major cardiac arrest by as much as 78%. The team is of the opinion that the stem cells simply targets cardiac cells and hence cure them.

There are fair chances that the study would be extended to Phase III trials in the first half of next year and if things would all go well, the treatment would be out on sale by 2015.

Meanwhile, another study was done. It was told that stem cells were harvested from the heart of patients. The study called as SCIPIO (Cardiac Stem Cell Infusion in Patients with Ischemic cardiOmyopathy) is in preliminary stage as of now. The team led by Roberto Bolli of the University of Louisville roped in 23 patients with weak hearts, out of which 16 were categorized in the treatment group.

As of now, the results are quite promising and there are fair expectations that this study would raise hopes of cure for patients suffering from heart ailments.
