Vitamin D is generally considered very important for human beings, but a fresh look at medical evidences has revealed that Vitamin D has mixed effects on cancer and its associated risks.
Extra vitamin D and calcium are known to offer little but good protection against fractures in elderly people, but the same resource do not have any impact or let us say it has a very slight impact on the risk of cancer.
Earlier, we heard some researchers suggesting that vitamin D (with or without calcium) could help lower the risk of cancer, but recent trials have slashed all those hopes among medical professionals and among people as well.
Regarding the new findings, some comments also came from Dr. Michael Pollak, who heads the division of cancer prevention at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, though he was not involved in the recent study.
He cleared that: “It turns out that as a group, all of the micronutrient supplements have been disappointing. Even one of the best candidates, which is vitamin D, is certainly no slam dunk”.
The new report was published on Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine. The report has been commissioned by the government-backed U. S. Preventive Services Task Force to inform its public recommendations as well in the issue.
The findings have included approximately 19 gold standard experiments (randomized controlled trials) on vitamin D, with or without calcium. Some of the trials lasted for seven months, whereas many other continued for seven years. Also, the experiments included a wide range in size of a few thousand participants to tens of thousands. No bog victory was achieved as only three of the experiments firmly reported on cancer.
