As per recent reports, it has been claimed that a computer program, dubbed Dr. Fill, which was designed with the intent of working out crossword puzzles, ended up at the 141st podium among more than 600 human who were laboring on solving puzzles during an event held in the New York City over the weekend.
Matthew Ginsberg, the designer of Dr. Fill, was expecting that his software puzzle solver program would end up at least in the Top 50, with clams that it can make a better score with luck and worse without it, at the “American Crossword Puzzle Tournament” held recently.
While expressing his opinion regarding the performance of the program during the course of the event, Ginsberg on Sunday said in his statement, “It was within the range, but I wish it had done better. I'll be back next year”.
Dr. Fill, as per reports, does exceptionally well with conservative crosswords and ended up the hardest seventh and the decisive puzzle without any major hitch. But the program Dr. Fill, which was having problems while dealing with a variety of unusual themes, was found struggling with various ones, counting those in which words were meant for being spelled backward. “Two of the puzzles were bizarre in ways that were bad for it”, Ginsberg later revealed.
The event was won by Dan Feyer for the third straight year. Dr Fill was developed by Matthew Ginsberg, 56 years old, who is the chief executive of the “On Time Systems”. A Ph. D. holder from Oxford, Ginsberg used to teach at Stanford and has also penned a book on the topic of artificial intelligence. He makes crossword puzzles out of passion and hobby.
