Nepal Family Expects To Get Rid of “Werewolf Syndrome”

A rare case of genetic disease has been getting the attention of medical community, as it was revealed that a family is suffering from the same. Due to the same, the family members have hairs grown all over the face. Touted as "werewolf syndrome", can cause hairs to grow between eyes and across brows.

It was only after they got a call from a surgeon at the Kathmandu Model Hospital that hypertrichosis can be treated that the family which involves Devi Budhathoki, 37, and her two daughters and one son, could get some sigh of relief. They have been victim of constant humiliation from residents of the remote northwestern village of Khare, near the border with the Tibetan border, where they live. It was not an easy task for the family as they were being treated badly by the villagers due to the rare disease before they arrive in the Nepalese capital of Kathmandu on Sunday.

"My children have talked about a new life ever since we received word that the hospital was going to treat us”, said Budhathoki, who is a farmer. Apparently, Budhathoki has a seven-year-old son and 17-year-old daughter too which are not identified with the disease.

So far, the family has faced constant humiliation and this has made the mother worried a lot about her kids who had even refused to go to school on the fear of being ridiculed again and again.

It was further told that those who were previously affected with the disease used to work as freakshow performers at circuses. But, this disease is rarely heard now.

As of now, the best possible treatment is found to be laser operation for the family. The family is expecting that they would get a new lease of life with the treatment available.
