Aged Physicians to Have Mandatory Eye Examination

Aged Physicians to Have Mandatory Eye Examination

It might seem an unorthodox move but after reports of a Laval radiologists missing breast cancer in 109 patients during screening, Quebec's College of Physicians has proposed to make eye examination mandatory for all the physicians over the age of 70 years.

Physicians do need to have proper eye sight as well as hearing capabilities in order to diagnose a person properly. After the report that a 77-year-old Raymond Bergeron, now retired, had misread mammography X-rays at a rate that is more than five times the acceptable provincial norm, it has become more important to make sure that incidences like these don’t happen again. Although it has not been proven yet that poor eyesight was the cause of Bergeron's failing to detect cancer tumors, the college is not taking any chances.

There is some opposition being raised in the manner these proposals are being made. Some physicians although welcoming this move are stating that a questionnaire which is also being proposed, is somehow discriminatory in against manner as physicians are being told to admit problem in their vision.

But, Bernard dismissed all these allegations, stating that the questionnaire does not require eye exams and can be added at a later stage.
