The world’s fourth-oldest person, Dr. Leila Daughtry Denmark, a Georgia pediatrician, died at the age of 114. Denmark retired from the post of practicing physician at the time when she was 103, and died on Sunday at her daughter's home in Athens.
She was the third child among 13 siblings and was born on Feb. 1, 1898 in eastern Georgia and grew up with a dream that she wants to heal animals. Her wish led her to the Medical College of Georgia in 1924, and was the only woman in the college to get enrolled for the course.
Not only this, she also became the third woman to earn a medical degree from the school. She started her career with Grady Hospital in Atlanta and became the first intern of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. As per the New Georgia Encyclopedia, she opened up a private clinic in her Atlanta home in 1930, so that she could take care of her new born child.
In addition, it has been found that she did pioneering research on whooping cough at the time when the disease swept Atlanta in 1932. She also developed an effective vaccine for the disease as well. Denmark was a kind of person who never charged more than $10 for an office visit and made sure that she does all her office work herself. This is the reason that she never employed a nurse or any receptionist in her office.
She even wrote a number of books, and majority of her books were based on child-rearing philosophy. She did not break at the time when she lost her husband and continued to work to keep her busy. Denmark gave credit of living long to water and healthy diet.
