Donating Organ Means Saving A Life

Donating Organ Means Saving A Life

Around 30 years ago, Colin was just 35 when he came to know that he is suffering from stressful illness IGA nephritis.

During this problem, IGA, better known as a protein that helps the body in fighting back several infections, gets settled down in the kidney. It is basically a kidney disorder, which then allows this protein to get deposited into it. Later, after certain number of years, it makes the kidney either bleed else it flushes out that protein through urine.

After 20 years, when Colin consulted a doctor, he was told that he might need a kidney transplant one day but till the time a donor does not exist, he has to be on hemo dialysis.

For two and a half years, he got this treatment at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and then one telephone call; and his life got totally changed.

That call was from a donor. It was on April 12, 2002 at 2.45am, when the daily prayers of Colin and his family worked out and they got a healthy donor. As said by Colin, “The one thing that day emphasized was that a transplant is a privilege and not a right. The most important thing for families to do is to discuss donation before a death in the family occurs so that everyone is aware of their loved one's wishes in relation to organ donation".

It is very difficult for a family to allow its loved one to donate his organ and give life to a stranger.

Whereas, on the other side, Colin today is pretty healthy and is living and cherishing his life watching his children grown up. His son has joined air force and his daughter is a university student today. It has been 10 successful years of Colin kidney transplant and therefore he wishes to celebrate it in a genuine way tomorrow.
