Health Secretary Supports Regional Pay

It seems that it would not be easy for regional pay to make way for poor NHS workers as the Welsh government has shown its fierce opposition to the same. The shocking part is that even the Health Secretary, Andrew Lansley, has shown its defense for the Treasury’s push for regional pay in the health service.

“Our stance on introducing regional pay is clear – we do not support it. We view it as Tory code for cutting the pay of NHS workers in Wales”, said Welsh Health Minister Lesley Griffiths, while confirming her stance on the issue.

It is believed that variable pay could mar the future of health services and nurses in Wales and there must be some other alternative found else there are fair chances that competition between organizations would become a lot stronger. Peter Meredith-Smith, associate director of the Royal College of Nursing in Wales, has made it clear that such moves would bring a sense of market philosophy which could make things a lot worst for the health care system.

It was only when Mr. Lansley got to know that the staff working in the worst areas of the country are comparatively paid less that he asserted that there is dire need to introduce a regional pay and rewards scheme which would allow the NHS workers in north of England or the Midlands would be entitled for reduced par as compared to their southern counterparts.

It was later claimed by Shadow Health Secretary Andy Burnham that while there is already simmering difference between north-southern side of NHS, and instead of bridging the gap, the government is trying to broaden the differences.

There is need that this issue is being well debated so that there is no point of discriminations raised later and no one feels that unfair treatment is being given to the front line staff.
