Lyme Disease Cases Go Unreported

As per a report, which has been published in the B. C. Medical Journal, it has been revealed that more than 66% doctors in British Columbia have forgotten to properly report the last Lyme disease case, which they handled.

The survey, which was taken out by the BC Centre for Disease Control, has revealed that some of the common replies of doctors were they forget the steps involved to report the case, the patient, he attended was not his patient and they were out of town at that time.

Out of 111 doctors, who were asked whether or not they were sure that the last patient, whom they have seen, was suffering from Lyme disease, some 14% doctors were quite sure that the patient was suffering from Lyme disease and 59% said that there were probable chances of it. However, 24% said they were not completely sure and rest 3% said that they are completely sure that patients were not suffering from Lyme disease.

Dr. Bonnie Henryk, who is the BCCDC expert, and had also led the study, said that there has been improvement and doctors have started reporting about Lyme cases, but a lot more needs to be done to make sure that doctors report each and every case of Lyme disease.

This will further help them to ask the government to do something constructive to control the disease. It will also help research groups to come forth and conduct study to find new treatments for it.

“Anything that makes doctors do extra work is unpopular because it takes up more time. The good news is that the survey also showed that when doctors are seeing patients with symptoms, they are treating appropriately”, further affirmed Bonnie.
