Scientists Claim Sierra Nevada Mountains to Be Rising

A team of Earth scientists from Nevada have claimed that the level of mountain range of Sierra Nevada is still rising. The scientists have stated that their recent measurements have been administered using latest techniques, which include space-based radar equipment and also the latest GPS system.

The findings of the research suggest that the range is rising by one to two millimeters each year, which will account for an inch in a decade. Nevertheless, it has been concluded that the present range is less than 3 million years old, which is far less than the estimation of the scientists previously.

Moreover, it has been suggested by the scientists that the range, which has been rising in the upward direction, reached its present height millions of years ago.

William C. Hammond, of the University of Nevada's Geodetic and Seismological Laboratories in Reno, and his colleagues, asserted that they have been taking into account the activities along 400 miles of the Nevada Mountains and measuring the height of these peaks since the past 10 years.

Hammond said, “Mt. Whitney's official summits of 14,494 feet were originally a long volcanic arc some 60 million years ago, when constant eruptions, powerful earthquakes and giant landslides marked their rise”.
