Children in Urban Areas Largely Catch Food Allergies

It has been unveiled in a new study, published in Clinical Pediatrics, conducted by a group of researchers at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine that food allergies are more likely to be seen in children of urban areas than those in rural areas.

Dr. Ruchi Gupta, an Assistant Professor of pediatrics and colleagues say that it is for the first time that population density and environment have been found as the contributing factors to food allergies.

The study had been carried out to look at risks of allergic reactions amid children with effects of geographic locations. Nearly 38,500 children below 18 years of age were enrolled for the review.

Food allergies kill around 150 kids each year by lowering down blood pressure and then causing throat to swell and problems in breathing.

A representative from all U. S. households was interviewed about food allergies in children and the data was mapped and compared with their bucolic ZIP codes. It was noted that higher percentage of children were suffering from such reactions in comparison with those in their ZIP codes.

"It's not just about where you eat out ... but your interactions with camps, schools, even bus drivers. You always have to be vigilant on behalf of your child", said Jennifer Jobrack, the Midwest director of the Food Allergy Initiative.
