Scientists Find Two Genes Associated with Migraine

While a previous study by a team of U. S. researchers had revealed three gene variants that could lead to risk a person of suffering migraine, surveyors from Leiden University Medical Centre in the Netherlands have now found two additional genes linked to the condition, a recent report reveals.

The journal Nature Genetics containing the report has uncovered that the risk for migraine without aura, which is the most common type of the illness, is increased by nearly 10-15% if the two newly discovered genes are inherited by a person.

While migraine is identified by symptoms like recurrence of severe headaches, resulting in nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound, migraine without aura that affects a majority of the population does not show any such signs of feeling weak, the team told.

Thus, the links, however, may not help patients currently, but may prove helpful to diagnose the disease as well as in paving a way to develop new therapies for the same. "The identified genes open new doors to investigate how this type of migraine comes about", says lead researcher Dr. Arn van den Maagdenberg.
