Small Girl Recovers of Severe Burns, Gets New Skin

As per a new report, small Isabella "Pippie" Kruger, 3, whose body had been burnt up to 80% six months ago, has relived her first day after her severe fire accident on Tuesday when she received a surgery.

It has been found that the girl has become the first South African to have her own artificially grown skin in a laboratory in Boston, US.

Pippie was enjoying on New Year’s Eve last year, when suddenly her father got a gel fire lighter exploded in his hands and she was caught by flames. While doctors had told her parents, Anice and Erwin, after her accident that she could not survive for long, the girl has now completed her six months of survival in the hospital where she is being treated.

She has received a surgery at Netcare Garden City hospital on Monday night, in which her skin was placed on her wounds successfully. It is being said that two small two by six centimetre grafts of her own skin were used by surgeons to grow forty-one sheets of skin for her.

“There was nothing during the operation to suggest any problems, so we are very hopeful it will be very successful. We will wait for good news”, says Dr. Sven Kili, from Sanofi Genzyme, which is the company growing the skin.
