Internet has grown like a wild forest fire. With the demand growing and more and more people coming online, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann), which is a premier body that assigns domain name, received 1,930 proposals for 1,410 different internet suffixes.
These newly proposed top level domain names that would compete with .com and .uk would be revealed by ICANN in London on Wednesday. These new suffixes would include domains like .lol, .bank, .baby, .music, .doctor, .YouTube and .Google. Currently, there are 300 suffixes that are in use, and this expansion would add more suffixes based on the hobbies, ethnic groups and corporate brand names.
The main aim of these new suffixes is to let the businesses that joined the internet bandwagon later find a desirable name by opting for alternative. It is generally seen that a business is unable to capture its client online as it does not have a domain name that suits itself. But what is most profound fact is that ICANN received 116 proposals for suffixes using characters that are beyond the 26 letters used in English.
It would take at least a year or even two for ICANN to approve all the new suffixes after which they would be put to practice.
