Older Women Should Avoid Taking Vitamin Supplements

U. S. Preventive Services Task Force of the Department of Health and Human Services has been claiming that vitamin supplements taken by postmenopausal or older women are not much beneficial and provide only a little protection against fractures, a recent report has unfolded.

While suggesting that the daily doses of 1,000 milligrams of calcium as well as 400 IU of vitamin D should be avoided, the team of surveyors has told that these could instead put elderly women at a risk of developing a cardiovascular disease such as heart attacks and strokes.

It is being said that the harms even tend to overdo the benefits offered by pills.

Thus, experts and dietitians have been recommending that women should rather go for a proper diet in place of depending upon these drugs. They affirm that a healthy diet is enough for taking in calcium and vitamin D, which are undoubtedly an essential part to remain in good health.

Also, it has been told by health chiefs that another source of vitamin D is sunlight, exposure to which can naturally produce it in the body.

Dr. Eugene Scioscia, an OBGYN at Allegheny General Hospital, said, “Pay attention, listen to your physicians, watch for reports and further information regarding this at this juncture”.
