It has been found in recent report that the proposal by the NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg for the ban of large sized beverages is at risk of facing a legal challenge if not taken back.
The report has found that the mayor had put a proposal that drinks served at movie theaters, sports arenas, restaurants and food carts in larger than 16 ounces should be stopped.
The aim of the mayor was to reduce the consumption levels of sweet beverages so that the obesity rates in the New York City could be cut. It is being said that the disease targets a large number of people in the region.
Also, the mayor concerned the increasing spending of billions of dollars each year on treating and supporting those with weight-related health problems.
However, critics say that banning super-sized drinks cannot bring a change in the picture. It is being said that the same would have no effect on consumption levels of people. And only removal of large drinks is not a solution, other particular foods need to be removed in regards of the aim.
“We have one federal Food and Drug Administration that determines what products are legal or not legal, or safe for consumption or not safe for consumption”, said Rob Bookman, a representative of the New York Restaurant Association.
