Taiwan FDA Tests South Korean Shellfish

It has been found in a recent report that the shellfish imports from South Korea are being doubted by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Taiwan and inspections are thus being conducted.

The concerns have been raised by the US FDA, which has announced that some of the South Korean seafood is contaminated with norovirus. It has affirmed that a total of four people have fallen sick after consuming seafood such as clams, mussels, oysters and scallops supplied by the country.

The US FDA suspects that the products might have faced an exposure to human fecal waste and thus have caught norovirus, which is a transmittable bacterium that causes viral gastroenteritis.

Warnings have also come from the agency that the South Korean products should no more be sold in the market. The products include everything received by the US before May 1 ranging from canned and processed foods like molluscan shellfish.

While Taiwan imports the majority of oysters from the US, it also imports nearly one third of these from South Korea. It has been told that three batches, including 77,800 kilograms of oysters, have been imported since May.

It is thus that the Taiwan’s FDA has been testing the imported products for the virus.
