Workers Condemn Cuts in Refugee Health Care

A recent report has revealed the cuts to be provided to refugees from June 30 for medical services are being criticized by doctors and nurses in Ottawa.

It has been found that health care workers have decided to protest against the move on Monday. They have been claiming that the current system that involves the expenses of the refugees in a province to be incurred by the federal government is not correct.

Also, it is being said by them that all expenses being given to them are almost equivalent to the money paid to people collecting social assistance.

Ottawa claims that the end of provision of vision, dental and prescription drugs to refugees would help the city's health groups to collect atleast $20 million each year.

However, refugee advocates and health groups are of the opposite view. Believing that the same would rather cost more in the long run to the health care system, they say that expectant mothers would not be able to get prenatal care and other patients may fail to get a required medication.

"We fully expect there will be an increase in the risk of complications from illnesses and that's expensive, so I'd be very surprised if there's any costs savings to this at all", said Dr. Meb Rashid of the Crossroads Medical Clinic.
