With the recent success of SpaceX, there is a huge possibility of commercial space exploration that has opened. Although, there are a lot of risks that are involved in it, which were also evident in the case of SpaceX, which had to go through a lot of hiccups before having a proper launch.
The biggest benefit that has come out from this commercial-NASA tie-up is that the flights are very low cost, and there is a lot of scope of expansion in this market. But a question that has come across the minds of all the people associated with space exploration is that can NASA take so much risk by involving commercial players into the arena that has been exclusive to government agency.
There are a lot of risks and opportunities associated with the burgeoning commercial spaceflight industry. According to William Gerstenmaier, Associate Administrator for NASA's Human Exploration Operations Directorate, by taking this risk, NASA would be able to go to and from space station on lower costs.
This would be beneficial to NASA as the agency would now focus on the utilization of ISS and development of new technologies for next generation space flights rather than tormenting itself with current ones.
