Moon’s Crater Found to Be Quarterly Covered with Ice

NASA scientists have claimed that they have discovered that a crater located near to the south pole of moon is quarterly covered with ice. The scientists stated that it was after they observed moon using NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft, that they found ice covering quarter of crater.

The NASA team along with university students affirmed that the LRO emits laser light from its laser altimeter, which was used to analyze the surface of the Shackleton crater. Further, it was notified that the laser light is capable of measuring till the depth, which is equivalent to its wavelength that is approximately one micron.

During the analysis, it was administered that the surface of the crater was shinier and brighter than the surfaces of the other nearby located craters. Hence, it was concluded that the crater must have been covered with ice.

Gregory Neumann of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center affirmed that it has been almost two years that these brightness measurements are confusing their team. Moreover, the division of brightness is not accordance to the team’s expectations.

Gregory Neumann said, “Practically every measurement related to ice and other volatile compounds on the moon is surprising, given the cosmically cold temperatures inside its polar craters”.
