Condors' at High Risk of Lead Poisoning

Condors' at High Risk of Lead Poisoning

California condors have survived their extinction and their number is growing but research from experts is warning that the bird species and their survival is at a big risk from lead poisoning, which is not seeing any hope for the birds' long-term future.

The above report has been submitted by KQED’s Mr. Lauren Sommer, which has clearly showcased the findings of the study author Ms. Myra Finkelstein, a research toxicologist at UC Santa Cruz and the principal author of a report on the condor problem in this week's issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The author has clearly appealed in her study that more human help and care is needed urgently to save lives of condors, which were only 22 in California in the year 1982 but with breeding program they are now in hundreds.

She explained that California condor’s persistent exposure to lead-based bullets is the big threat to them. Though experts and medical veterans are providing their best medical aid and care to the species, the threat continues.

Further enlightening the risks, Ms. Finkelstein said that “Lead poisoning in the condors is now "of epidemic proportions"”.

Suggestions say that condors' feeding habits must be changed and captive breeding programs must be continued.
